Car shopping can be a lot of fun. It’s tempting to get swept up in the excitement of buying a new car. Make sure you’re following these guidelines before you begin this process.
- If a person claims to work for a dealer but you are not at their place of business, inquire about their dealer license. Illegal automobile salespeople may claim you they work for a reputable dealership. If you’re thinking about buying from someone you encountered through a newspaper ad or an online advertisement site like Craigslist, make sure this is true by giving them a call.
- Please see the vehicle’s title before you buy it! Vermont requires that all vehicles that are 15 years old or newer be titled. A vehicle’s title is required for both registration and sale, and it cannot be sold without one. Do not fall victim to a fraud if you are told that the title is at your house or at the bank. Without a title, there will be no selling!
- Check the title to see if it says “salvaged, rebuilt, or totaled” if the car has ever been labeled as such. There is a 50 percent discount on the book value of vehicles labeled “salvaged,” “rebuilt,” “totaled,” “flooded,” “reconstructed,” and so on. In Vermont, it is against the law to sell a car without making this clear in writing on the bill of sale and other relevant selling documentation.
- Check to see if the odometer on the vehicle is accurate. It is necessary to declare a vehicle’s “actual mileage unknown” if the odometer reading is incorrect. It is very uncommon for vehicles in this condition to be worth only half of their actual value. In addition, if the vehicle’s odometer does not work properly, it cannot be examined in Vermont.
- The mechanic can inspect the vehicle for you. It’s never a bad idea to have a skilled auto mechanic inspect a vehicle before purchasing it. This will save you money, time, and aggravation, plus it will verify that the car is safe and meets all Vermont safety inspection standards.
- Take a look at the car’s inspection sticker. Vermont inspection stickers should be checked to make sure they are still valid and have been assigned to the vehicle they are fastened to. In order to make sure that the sticker you see inside the car relates to the vehicle you’re considering purchasing, compare the brand, year, and VIN number on the sticker.
- A “Buyer’s Guide’ should be displayed on the vehicle you intend to purchase if you plan to do so from a dealership. If a vehicle is being sold, federal and Vermont law mandate that it display a Buyer’s Guide in one of its windows. To find out if the vehicle is covered by a warranty or sold “As Is,” refer to the Buyer’s Guide. After the sale has been completed, you have very limited recourse if you have an issue with the property.”
- Enter the car’s identification number to perform an online vehicle history check with Carfax, Autocheck, or a comparable service. In spite of the fact that the Vermont DMV does not promote any specific online vehicle history seller, we believe it can be a useful tool when evaluating the purchase of a car. It is common for these reports to provide a detailed history of a car, warning a prospective buyer of potential difficulties, such as branded titles, odometer issues, and prior crashes.
- Consider asking the seller if the vehicle you’re looking at has ever been in a collision before purchasing it. If a vehicle’s title isn’t branded, it doesn’t indicate it hasn’t been in a collision. An insurance company may not have declared a vehicle a total loss in the event of a collision. There will be no branding on the title in these circumstances. An automotive mechanic should inspect the structural integrity of a car that has been in an accident to make sure it is safe.
