Storage units are a popular solution for people who have too much stuff and don’t know what to do with it. But there are some things that you shouldn’t store in a storage unit, even if it is storage near me, because they could cause problems if the unit is flooded or otherwise compromised. Here’s a list of five things to leave at home before entering your storage facility:
Perishable Food
It’s not safe to keep perishable food in an airtight container, so it should be thrown out immediately. If you can’t get rid of it yourself, ask someone else to take care of the task. And if you’re storing entire appliances like refrigerators or dishwashers, make sure you empty them first!
Electronics
Storing electronics in a storage unit is dangerous because they can attract water, which could lead to rusting. This means that you should consider throwing out your TV before storing it away, even if the screen doesn’t have any cracks or other visible damage.
It’s also not safe to store batteries inside of appliances like stereos and microwaves, because this practice can lead to a fire. A flash of light and smoke is not something you want in your storage unit!
Liquids
Pouring liquids into containers that are designed for holding them will only make the problem worse, because then they’ll leak out even more easily when it comes time to move things around. If you’ve got to store liquids, make sure they’re in their original containers.
Personal Documents
Even if you are using a storage near me, it’s not safe to keep personal documents in the storage unit. If the unit gets wet, damaged or compromised in any way, these documents will be ruined.
If you want to keep them safe and make it easy to access them later, bring a copy of your important papers with you when you go into storage. That way if something does happen while they’re stored away in the facility, at least there is a backup.
